In the popular image, the ant queen is the boss. Biologically that is not true: she lays eggs, and the organisation of the colony emerges from the interplay of many. This very vagueness is instructive for management.
Vision instead of command
In the AntsManagement method the queen stands for vision and purpose: she is the fixed point around which everything is arranged – not the person who instructs every step. Leadership creates orientation and leaves execution to those who are close to the work.
Three questions for leaders
- Does everyone on the team know the “why” of our work?
- Which decisions am I still making that others could make better?
- How would I notice that trust in the team is growing?
If you write down the answers honestly, you already have a draft of your personal leadership profile. More on this in the workshop “The Queen & her Colony”.
